2023 P1 Registration – Phase 2A

19/07/23

Finally, the results of Phase 2A is out.  27 schools were oversubscribed, with 3 schools (Henry Park Primary, Kranji Primary and Fern Green Primary) just reaching 100% take-up rate without requiring balloting!  What a relief for folks who went for these 3 schools.

Curiously, all 27 schools require balloting, with none just having a cut-off stage without balloting.  Most of these schools only involve Singapore citizens, but there are 3 schools where PRs are involved (Frontier Primary, Jurong West Primary and Riverside Primary).  We noted that Riverside Primary has the highest number of people joining in on the last day (15) of Phase 2A which caused the oversubscription.  In any case, its application rate is still lower than last year’s (2021) number of 72.

Gongshang Primary is, by far, the most oversubscribed school this year in Phase 2A.  It is 354% oversubscribed, and only those who live within 1km qualify to ballot.  The increase of 10 spaces in its cohort isn’t enough to cater to the demand, which is suspected because of its MK kids graduating kindergarten.

The school with the biggest number of applicants compared to last year is Angsana Primary.  There were 75 additional applicants this year!  In any case, the school does not require balloting in spite of this.  Punggol View Primary has the biggest decrease from last year, with almost 31 less applicants.

Good luck to all parents involved with the balloting this week!

Today is the 2nd day of Phase 2A.  Twenty-three schools have been oversubscribed, and they are the usual suspects.

Let me explain the chart again.  The column APP refers to the current application over the available places.  Anything above 100% is highlighted, and that school will likely have to undergo some form of balloting or cut-off.  Amongst these schools, Gongshang Primary is the leader, with 354% over the limit.  Parents vying for this school should consider switching their choice if possible, but it’s unlikely you can switch since most of us only have 1 alma mater.

Then we have TUR, or take-up rate, which show the amount of vacancies left in the school for the rest of the P1 registration exercise.  Nanyang Primary has the highest at 85%, with Tao Nan trailing closely at 83%.  A little note about these top schools.  It appears that they are usually greatly competitive in the early phases, which leaves only the minimum 40 places in Phase 2C.  There will be a ton of people trying to get in at Phase 2C.  So the chance of getting in is very slim.  Word of advice, if you are not alumni of these schools, it’s better to look somewhere else.

Next are the “Actuals”, or the raw number of applicants who applied during Day 1 and Day 2.  Here there is a tie between Nanyang Primary and Gongshang Primary for the leading spot of 163 applicants.  Of course, the cohort size of Nanyang Primary is 390 versus that of Gongshang Primary at only 220, which makes Gongshang’s achievement highly impressive.

That’s all I can say.  Tomorrow is the last day of Phase 2A.  Relax.  What will be, will be.  May you all have good fortune and find the best school for your child.

So, the maddening rush begins 🙂

Today is the first day of the 2023 P1 Registration Phase 2A.  A few schools have already been oversubscribed, but we should not assume the numbers to be static as parents can easily withdraw from those oversubscribed school to try for the other spouse’s alma mater.

First, on reading the table.  APP stands for “application”, ie. the number of children currently subscribed, relative to the number of places available for the Phase.  If it is more than 100%, it means there are more applicants than places available.  I have highlighted schools which have been oversubscribed in this column.  Amongst these is Gongshang Primary, which has an overwhelming number of applicants (309%) for this Phase.

Next, we have TUR, or “take-up rate”.  This shows the percentage of the places in the school already taken up.  Tao Nan has the highest, with 82% of the school already filled!

The next column shows the actual numbers of applicants in Day 1Gongshang Primary has the most number of parents subscribing to the school (142).

The column “2022” shows last year’s Phase 2A for comparison.  To do that, we calculate the difference between the actuals in 2023 and 2022.

Goodluck and godspeed.
