P1 Registration 2021: Phase 2A(2) (Updated!)

The first day of Phase 2A(2) has ended.  This Phase is intended for ex-alumni parents, staff, and MOE Kindergarten students.

We have counted at least 5 schools which are oversubscribed.  Aside from Temasek, Nan Hua, Frontier and Rulang, the biggest surprise is Horizon, which is already 126% oversubscribed.

In the table below, the most important column is the 2021-2020 column.  A negative value means that there are LESS people this year applying for the school at this stage, while a positive value means that it is MORE competitive this year.  From the looks of it, it seems that most schools are less competitive this year, but things could change in the last day of Phase 2A(2).  Valour Primary, in Punggol, was new last year, so its take up rate this year for Phase 2A(2) so far is quite impressive.  Nanyang is already at 90% take up rate, and is not participating in this year’s Phase 2A(2).

 

A lot of parents eligible for this Phase is probably studying this data to make their final decision in the last day of the Phase.  So we should see more schools getting oversubscribed.

MOE finally released the results of the 2021 Phase 2A(2) exercise.

12 schools are oversubscribed, namely:
Frontier Primary
Gongshang Primary
Holy Innocents’ Primary
Horizon Primary
Nan Hua Primary
Pei Chun Primary
Punggol Green Primary
Rulang Primary
South View Primary
St Hilda’s Primary
Tao Nan
Temasek Primary

Of these schools, Nan Hua is the most oversubscribed at 420%!  But it is good to see the more usual “neighbourhood” schools like Frontier, Horizon, and Punggol Green becoming more popular.

An early warning to parents who can only come in later Phases: all the schools who have to ballot in this Phase are already at least 80% full.  Nanyang, which did not participate in this Phase, has a take up rate of 90% since Phase 2A(1)!  It is likely that these schools, along with those which did not feature in this Phase, are likely to be very competitive in the remaining Phases this year.

Finally, when reviewing this data, please take into consideration the Difference columns.  A positive value for 2021-2020 along with a negative value for the By Cohort column means the school is facing increased demand this year but the decrease in vacancies allotted for the school is making it more competitive this year.  For example, Townsville Primary in Ang Mo Kio has its cohort intake reduced by 20 places but had an increase of 6 registrants this year.  But parents shouldn’t worry as its Take up rates (TUR) is only about 30% :).  But you should be worried for schools like West Spring in Bukit Panjang which has an increase of 21 registrants for Phase 2A(2) this year but did not have any changes to its cohort this year.  Such schools are likely to face intense competition in the upcoming Phases.
