Phase 1 is over.  The overall take-up rate for 2015 Phase 1 across all schools was very similar with that in 2014 (less than 1% increase).  However, some schools did experience changes of between -16% to 25%.  The newer schools enjoy the largest increases, as they are now starting to take in siblings of the students who entered the school in the last few years.

At 61%, Horizon Primary has the highest take-up rate for Phase 1 this year.  Nanyang, Tao Nan and Nan Hua are also the schools which have more than half of their places taken up by Phase 1.

Once again, many parents have to gear up for the most nail-biting experience of the year… the Primary One Registration.  Parents with children already in Primary schools can relax, as they will get to enjoy absolute priority in Phase 1 of the Registration exercise, which starts tomorrow 2 July 2015.  This is, of course, assuming they are registering their child in the same school as his/her siblings.

For many other parents who do not enjoy such priority, it is important to start planning your registration strategy by understanding the competition for the schools that you desire. 

Firstly, even though MOE says that the total number of places offered to parents for next year’s Primary one is “similar” to 2015’s cohort, and that 3 new schools (Oasis, Punggol Cove and Waterway Primary Schools) are coming online to take up the slack in the Punggol region, you should be aware that the total number of vacancies this year is 41,860, compared to last year’s 42,460.  This represents a loss of 600 vacancies, or 20 classes across Singapore.  This is mitigated by the fact that the birth rate for 2009 is 256 lesser than 2008.  For more information, please check our updated Births vs Places chart.

Below is a table showing all the schools with a change in vacancies.  The good news is, most of the losses are from less popular schools which were under-subscribed last year.  The bad news?  None of the more popular schools get to increase their vacancies.

Next, check our 2015 P1 Registration Balloting Risk table to get a feel of the level of risk of getting your desired Primary school.  If it is too high, you need to start planning for an alternative.
