Appreciating our Culture and Tradition – ‘AADUVOMEY! KONDAADUVOMEY!’

‘மரபையும் பண்பாட்டையும் போற்றுதல்’ – ஆடுவோமே! கொண்டாடுவோமே!

1.Pre-school Tamil Language teachers will have the opportunity to learn how to infuse culture and values while imparting the joy of learning, during the Symposium for Pre-School Tamil Language Teachers 2018 on Saturday, 30 June 2018 at Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre.

2. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Appreciating our Culture and Tradition – Aaduvomey! Kondaaduvomey1!”. Organised by the Tamil Language Learning and Promotion Committee (TLLPC), the symposium aims to develop and strengthen the capability of pre-school Tamil Language teachers, as they strive to promote Tamil as a living language among the younger generation.

3. Aside from the focus on infusing culture and values

in Tamil language lessons, this year’s symposium will also provide a platform for networking opportunities amongst participants.

4. In addition, a mobile app ‘Theenchittu, தேன்சிட்டு’ will be launched at the symposium. Following the launch, teachers and parents will be able to download the app for free. They can then have fun exploring the Tamil Language and its culture together with their preschool-aged children, as they learn about values and traditions through play.

5. Well-known writer and documentary film producer, Mr Bharathi Krishnakumar from Chennai, Tamil Nadu will be giving a keynote address at the symposium on helping children forge the connection between their personal identity and culture. Through four concurrent sessions and a forum discussion, various speakers will also share on the use of traditional songs, stories and games to develop children’s interest in Tamil Language and nurture their development of the language.

Nathan Hartono continues as CPCLL Ambassador for 2018

向洋2018年继续担任推广华文学习委员会的形象大使

Singer-songwriter Mr Nathan Hartono (向洋)will continue for the second year as Ambassador for the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) in 2018.

2. Following his success on Chinese reality singing competition “Sing! China” in 2016, Nathan has continued his efforts to improve his Chinese language proficiency and recently released his debut Mandarin single爱超给电. Even as he continues to develop his career in China, Nathan will also be using his social media platforms to engage Singapore students and youths in learning the Chinese language.

3. 肯学敢讲 (which means being willing to learn and daring to speak even if one makes mistakes), was the advice Nathan gave to students last year based on his personal experience. This year, he will be sharing more stories and personal anecdotes about learning Chinese via social media, as he works towards releasing his first ever Mandarin EP. He will also be asking quiz questions with interesting prizes for students via his social media posts.

4. Recounting his experience as the CPCLL Ambassador last year, Nathan said: “I had such a great experience with CPCLL in the past year. Being able to meet the students and interact with them was very encouraging. I saw their curiosity and interest in improving their mother tongue, not just as another subject to get better grades in, but as a very useful life skill. I’m excited to continue this partnership, and hopefully to keep inspiring students to learn and love the Chinese language.”

5. In support of his ambassadorship, Chairperson of CPCLL, Senior Parliamentary Secretary Ms Low Yen Ling said, “Nathan exemplifies the qualities we would like to see in our young today – courage and determination to take up challenges, and to overcome them despite the odds. I hope that Nathan’s music and example will continue to inspire our youths to embrace the Chinese language and enjoy learning it.”

Nominations open tomorrow for Most Inspiring Tamil Teachers’ Award 2018

2018 நல்லாசிரியர் விருதுக்கான நியமனங்கள் வரவேற்கப்படுகின்றன

Students, educators, parents, and members of the public are invited to nominate Tamil language teachers for the annual Most Inspiring Tamil Teachers’ (MITT) Award. The nomination is open from 20 March to 18 May 2018.

2. The Award aims to recognise Tamil language teachers in primary and secondary schools, junior colleges, and centralised institute who have made significant contributions to the teaching and learning of Tamil language in our schools. Nominees should be:

  • Teachers who act as catalysts in arousing students’ interest in Tamil language by infusing innovative pedagogies in the teaching of Tamil Language, and inspire students to be self-directed and engaged learners; and
  • Educators who teach with passion and demonstrate a keen interest in students’ well-being and have positively impacted their students.

3. Since its inauguration in 2002, the MITT Award has recognised 180 primary, secondary, and pre-university Tamil language teachers. This year, there will be a total of six awards in the ‘Primary’, ‘Secondary’ and ‘Pre-university’ categories. The names of the recipients will be announced in August 2018.

6. In addition to the MITT Award, two other awards will also be presented in August 2018: the Best NIE Trainee Teacher Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award1. The Best NIE Trainee Teacher Award recognises the best performing Tamil language trainee teacher during his/her course of study, while the Lifetime Achievement Award honours the contributions of our pioneer Tamil language teachers who have been exemplary in their role and have inspired generations of students and teachers. The Best NIE Trainee Teacher Award recipient will be selected by NIE, while the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient will be selected by representatives from Tamil Murasu, TLLPC, and STTU.
